Q&A with Gillian…
Why did you write The Elephant in the Gym?
I often say I felt called to write this book. I am so passionate about helping people find their own way to be healthy and fit. The fitness and diet industries have really done a number on us – and I’m tired of it. Because we don’t have to feel this way. My coaching philosophy was informed by my own experiences and inspired by my education and professional experience – this book grew from that. I want to change the industry… but more importantly, I want to help individuals bring kindness and compassion to their pursuit of health and fitness!
What might people be surprised to know about you?
I’m not a natural athlete. Growing up I was that chubby girl in PE who was always picked last. Finding running when I was 19 years old was a game changer for me. Finding self-compassion and kindness took a bit longer. But it has absolutely transformed me. That, and I’m a total geek. I love reading research papers (for fun!). Exploring new ideas and learning excites me. I’m constantly listening to podcasts and audiobooks and have an insatiable appetite for knowledge (and chocolate)! From positive psychology, to neuroscience and biomechanics I love learning how the body and mind work. And the coolest part? Not only can I apply everything I learn on myself (hello, super cool science experiment!), but I can use the information I learn to help my clients!
What is your perfect day?
It would start off with either a trail run or maybe a mountain bike ride (my newest passion) with friends. Anything active in nature with friends makes my heart happy. And of course, followed by brunch at a place with delicious food and coffee (I love coffee!). Then after a quick shower and clean up I’d spend the afternoon with my family doing something active or fun. Either a game of mini-golf or a hike if the weather is nice, or board games and hot chocolate if it’s rainy. Then we’d make some homemade pizza and watch a movie snuggled on the couch. Nature, activity, connection, great food. That sums up my version of perfection!
